Active in the wake of the French Revolution as a dissenting pamphleteer and lay preacher, he inspired a brilliant generation of writers and attracted the patronage of progressive men of the rising middle class. As William Wordsworth’s collaborator and constant companion in the formative period of their careers as poets, Coleridge participated in the sea change in English verse associated with Lyrical Ballads (1798). His poems of this period, speculative, meditative, and strangely oracular, put off early readers but survived the doubts of Wordsworth and Robert Southey to become recognized classics of the romantic idiom.                                       બોધમય વાતૉ       લગભગ ત્રણેક દાયકા પહેલાંની ઘટના છે. સવારના નવેક વાગ્યા હતા. હું નાઇટ ડ્યૂટી પૂરી કરીને સવારે આઠ વાગ્યે તો ક્વાર્ટર પર હતો. ગઇકાલે રાત્રે ચૌદ ડિલિવરીઓ થઇ હતી. મેટરનિટી વોર્ડના તમામ ખાટલા તાજા જન્મેલા શિશુઓ તથા નવી નવી જનેતાઓથી ભરાયેલા હતા.હું રાઉન્ડ લઇ રહ્યો હતો, ત્યાં એક ખાટલા પાસે મારે અટકી જવું પડયું. મેં પૂછ્યું, કેમ છે? કંકુ, તારી તબિયત સારી?* જવાબમાં કંકુ રડી પડી. કંકુ એ પેશન્ટ હતી, જેની પ્રસૂતિ મેં સૌથી છેલ્લે લગભગ સવારના સાતેક વાગ્યે કરાવી હતી. એ ફોરસેપ્સ ડિલિવરી હતી. કંકુ એકવડિયા બાંધાની અને ફિક્કી યુવતી હતી. એટલે પ્રસૂતિની આખીયે ઘટના એને વસમી પડી ગઇ હતી. ટાંકા પણ ખૂબ લેવા પડયા હતા.
